DIY THIS : Turn your DSLR into a pin hole camera.

Posted in DIY THIS: by shineyshine on February 5, 2010

In this DIY tutorial, I am going to show you how to turn your DSLR into a pin hole camera. Lomo fans, take note. I did this because its one of my Experimental Photography class assignment, to create a series of photograph using a pin hole camera. I thought it would be awesome to share it with you guys. Dont sweat it, most of the stuff you need are most probably lying in your home somewhere, somehow. You need;

- Black tape, I used my left over tapes from my DIY softboxes last time.

- A really pointy nippl- I mean needle.

- External flash. ( optional )

Note:

Well that’s about it. I will not be held responsible for any of your tiny accident toying with the needle, mkay

Okay, open your lens mount.  Face the camera down to avoid dusts going in. Take about 3-4 layers of tape and seal the opening, less tapes the better.Dont put too much, or else later it’ll hard for you to punch through the tape.

Once done, take the needle and carefully mark the center of the opening. Okay, now its HAMMER TIME! Slightly tap down the needle SLOWLY and GENTLY. We dont want the needle to go too deep into the camera, It might damage unwanted things such as your camera sensors. Dont sweat it, just do it slowly and you’ll be fine. Twist and twirl the needle to make the holes bigger, take your time.

To check if its working,go outside or just point your camera to the bright computer screen. See through the viewfinder if you see anything. Remember to check it in a brightly lit place, you wont be able to see the difference in a poorly lit room. This will only work on Manual Mode, crank up the ISO to the highest possible, experiment with the shutter speed. There you go :) now, if you want the picture to look more lomo like, I’ll link up a lomo color editing tutorial or you can download mine here, soon.

The best thing about it, you dont have to pay a single cent for the processing fees like conventional film lomo cameras. You can still print them, and it’ll still look as good.

In order to take pictures at night/poorly lit room ( like the one above ), you’ll need at least a Nikon SB-600 at 1/1 full power to penetrate through. Reminder dont be too trigger happy with that amount of power, it can bust your flash. Regularly check your flash temperature by touching the head. If you dont have an external flash, most probably you’ll have to stick shooting outdoors.
